On April 23, 1519, Leonardo, who had been ill for several months, wrote his will before a notary at Amboise. He asked a priest for confession and receive extreme unction. He died on May 2, 1519 in Cloux, at the age of 67 years. Tradition tells that he died in the arms of Francis I, but probably this is based on an erroneous interpretation of an epigraph written by Giorgio Vasari.
